string(9) "wordpress" 10 Questions To Ask Before Your Next Career Move | Inman Real Estate News

In a market obsessed with movement, Lauren Henss writes, the most powerful move you can make is knowing exactly what you want — before you make it.

If you’ve ever opened LinkedIn at midnight and thought, “Maybe it’s time for something new,” you’re not alone.

Gallup research shows that only about 31 percent of employees feel engaged at work, yet engaged workers are 14 percent more productive and 23 percent more profitable. Deloitte reports that just 52 percent of professionals feel confident they’re growing their careers, and those who don’t are 2.5 times more likely to leave within a year.

In real estate, these numbers are the norm. They show up in turnover, burnout and the quiet exits of top performers who stop seeing a path forward.

According to LinkedIn’s 2024 Workplace Learning Report, companies with a strong learning culture have 57 percent higher retention compared to those with a weaker learning culture. This is proof that alignment between role and values directly drives retention.

The takeaway is that career alignment isn’t soft. It’s strategic.

According to Harvard Business Review, more than 40 percent of workers are considering a job change, while 20 percent have already made one. Among knowledge workers, 70 percent are open to better opportunities.

That’s not a fluke. It’s a signal.

In my experience leading strategy and growth for Fortune 500 real-estate brands and proptech startups, I’ve learned one truth: “Career moves are less about promotion and more about alignment. The wrong move can stall your momentum; the right one compounds it.”

10 questions to ask before a career move

Whether you’re an agent, team leader or executive exploring what’s next, use these 10 questions to ask before a career move to clarify what you actually want. Don’t just chase what just looks good on paper.

1. What are my non-negotiables?

Start with what you won’t compromise on — ethics, flexibility, income stability, purpose or culture. Identify your absolute no’s first.

Action tip:

Write down your top three “deal breakers.” Then ask: Could I live with any of these for the right opportunity? This forces clarity fast.

2. What are my financial realities and trade-offs?

Money drives options, but not fulfillment. Define what you need versus what you’re willing to trade. Many professionals overvalue salary and undervalue learning, culture or lifestyle.

Action tip:

Calculate your minimum lifestyle number — the lowest amount that maintains your quality of life, and evaluate roles through that lens. You’ll negotiate from clarity, not fear.

3. What truly drives me?

Are you powered by recognition, purpose or growth? People who align work with core values perform better and stay longer.

In real estate, that might mean shifting from “closing deals” to “building systems.” You’re still creating value — just at a different scale.

Action tip:

Write a one-week “energy audit.” Track which daily tasks fuel you and which drain you. Patterns reveal your drivers better than guesswork.

4. How much autonomy do I want?

Agents are used to being their own CEOs. Moving into a structured organization can feel foreign, but sometimes freeing.

Action tip:

Ask interviewers: “How are decisions made here?” If the answer involves multiple committees or unclear authority, that’s a preview of your day-to-day reality.

5. How important is purpose and enjoyment?

You don’t have to love every minute of your job, but meaning matters. If your work no longer sparks curiosity or creativity, you’ll stall.

Action tip:

Complete this sentence: “I feel most fulfilled when … ” If you can’t answer it confidently, your next role should reignite that sense of contribution.

“Clarity beats certainty. The best career moves start with knowing what you won’t compromise on.”

6. How will I grow?

Every career pivot should teach you something new, including skills, systems or strategy. Growth doesn’t always mean promotion; it often lives in stretch projects.

Action tip:

In your next role conversation, ask: “How does this company develop its people?” If the answer is vague, you’ve learned what you need to know.

7. How can I bridge before I leap?

Don’t abandon your hard-won expertise. Repurpose it. Target hybrid roles like business development, partnerships or strategy that leverage your real estate acumen while expanding your corporate skill set.

Action tip:

Make a diagram: Skills you have, skills you want and where they overlap. That overlap is your bridge role.

8. How can I translate my wins?

Corporate hiring managers may not understand “top producer.” What they do understand: measurable impact.

Action tip:

Quantify achievements in business language, such as “increased lead volume 35 percent,” “reduced acquisition cost by 20 percent,” “grew revenue per agent X percent.” That translation turns experience into credibility.

9. How will I invest in learning?

If you trade commission upside for salary stability, ensure you’re gaining something that compounds — knowledge, credentials or leadership exposure.

Action tip:

Negotiate professional-development perks into your offer. Growth is your best ROI. Not perks, not titles.

10. How do I protect my network?

Your relationships are your long-term equity. The best career shifts compound your connections; they don’t cut them off.

Action tip:

Keep nurturing agent, partner and vendor relationships. Every introduction you make today expands the runway for your next opportunity tomorrow.

There’s no perfect next move, only an intentional one.

“Changing roles in real estate isn’t about chasing a title. It’s about aligning who you are with what you’re building next.”

Utilize these questions to ask before a career move — because when you choose based on self-knowledge, not impulse, you don’t just change jobs. You design your next chapter on purpose.
