string(9) "wordpress" Stop Waiting For Permission: Why Leadership Starts With Self-Trust | Inman Real Estate News

Leadership starts when you’re willing to show up in the chaos, in the unknown, in the unpolished version of yourself, broker Angela Yungk writes.

When I founded my publication Art Hive, I didn’t ask anyone for permission.

I didn’t get a degree in publishing. I didn’t make a poll on social media asking if anyone thought an arts and culture magazine was needed in the community. I decided it needed to be real and made it happen. That decision not only launched my publishing career for a decade but also shaped my entire life as an entrepreneur.

Here is the truth about business that no one is telling you: You don’t need anyone’s approval to get started. Self-leadership starts with you. You need to trust that you are enough. You can make decisions before you feel ready. It’s the ability to see an opportunity most are willing to bypass, and act, without waiting for approval or having 100 percent certainty.

The myth that’s holding you back

We’re taught to think leadership is a title, a position or a level of production. In reality, leadership is a posture. When you wait for permission, you relinquish control over your growth. You give someone else the power to decide when you’re “ready,” and the truth is, they’re not thinking about your readiness nearly as much as you are. In a fast-moving industry like ours, that delay can cost you opportunities, market share and momentum.

I’ve seen agents stall for months, sometimes years, because they thought they needed someone to validate their next move. Meanwhile, other agents with less experience were taking bold steps, learning on the fly and building the businesses that the “ready” agents were still dreaming about. Confidence is a byproduct of action.

Self-trust says:

  • I can figure things out as I go.
  • I’m willing to learn in public and unpolished
  • I’m not afraid to be seen trying

When you operate from self-trust, you stop waiting for the perfect moment, because you know perfection is a moving target; you will never find it. Opportunities in business are usually not blatantly obvious. The best ones usually show up disguised as problems, incomplete ideas or what feels like the wrong timing. So if you’ve trained yourself to wait for the green light, you’ll miss them entirely.

3 ways to lead yourself today (no permission required)

1. Make 1 decision you’ve been avoiding

Maybe it’s time to raise your prices, you’ve put off hiring an assistant, or you want to start a YouTube channel. Pick one thing and commit to it. No more searching online, no more content ideation or watching more videos, just get started.

2. Act on an idea within 24 hours

Ideas lose power the longer they linger in your mind. So take one step right away, even if it’s a small one: send that email, write your outline, launch the video.

3. Stop asking, ‘Am I ready?’

Replace it with, ‘What’s the next best step I can take right now at this very moment?’ That single shift changes your focus from fear to action.

You’re never ready — Do it anyway

Leadership rarely starts when you feel prepared. It starts when you’re willing to show up in the chaos, in the unknown, in the unpolished version of yourself. That can be scary, but the truth is that’s when real growth occurs.

The longer you delay, the more you reinforce the belief that you need permission. So stop waiting. Take the step. Speak up. Launch the thing. Because the only way to become the leader you’re waiting for… is to start leading now.
