Let’s be honest — somewhere along the way, the word leadership became taboo in real estate.
Say “leader” in a room full of agents, and you’ll see eyes roll or heads tilt, as if it’s a title reserved for someone in a corporate office rather than something lived every day in the field.
But here’s the truth: Leadership isn’t a title; it’s a lifestyle.
There are all shapes, sizes and styles of leaders. Some are bold visionaries; others are quiet influencers. Some lead from the front; others lead from the side, empowering those around them to shine brighter.
Leadership happens every day
Leadership is the mom who balances a 10-hour day in real estate and still shows up to coach her daughter’s volleyball team.
It’s the agent who takes time to mentor a new team member when they could just as easily focus on their own production.
It’s the professional who guides a nervous first-time buyer through the most emotional transaction of their life.
You see, leadership is not something you do once you get the title — it’s something you do every single day in every environment you’re in.
Whether you’re leading a client, a team, your family or your community, leadership shows up in your choices, your consistency and your character.
The 5 levels of leadership
As a John Maxwell-certified speaker, trainer and coach, I’ve spent years teaching the power of Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership. This framework reminds us that leadership is not about position — it’s about progression.
At the top of that journey is Level 5: The Pinnacle.
This is where leaders transcend their roles and become legacy builders.
At this level:
- People follow you for who you are, not just what you do.
- You’re focused on developing other leaders, not just followers.
- You build something that lasts beyond you.
- Your influence becomes a ripple effect — reaching far beyond your office walls and into the industry itself.
Pinnacle leaders are legacy-driven. They make “every day a masterpiece,” as Maxwell says, not because of recognition or reward, but because they’re committed to service, impact and lifting others higher.
Reclaiming the word ‘leader’
So, let’s stop treating leadership like a dirty word.
Leadership is not arrogance. It’s not a hierarchy. It’s not about being in charge — it’s about taking charge of how you show up for others.
This industry doesn’t just need more agents, brokers, or executives. It needs more leaders — the kind who model resilience, empathy, authenticity and purpose.
If you’re reading this, you’re already leading in more ways than you realize.
The question is: Are you leading by default … or by design?
Lean in.
Be intentional.
Be a Level 5 leader — one whose impact will be felt long after the deal is done.
Because the true measure of success in real estate isn’t the number of homes you sell. It’s the number of people you lift.
